The Kabul Tribune (KT) — UN Women has sounded the alarm over deepening aid cuts that are pushing women-led organizations in Afghanistan to the brink, warning that many of these groups may soon be forced to lay off significant portions of their staff.

In a post on X shared today, UN Women Afghanistan said women-led organizations are the “backbone of Afghanistan’s support system for women and girls,” but added that many now face devastating funding shortages.

According to a graphic released by the agency as part of the #16Days campaign, more than four in ten women-led organizations in Afghanistan expect to lay off up to 30 percent of their women staff because of shrinking aid budgets.

UN Women emphasized that cuts of this scale could severely undermine essential services for women and girls across the country.

“We cannot afford to lose this frontline leadership,” the agency wrote, urging the international community to sustain support for organizations that provide critical protection, humanitarian assistance, and advocacy for Afghan women and girls.
